Emend — Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 19, 2026
Emend (“the app”) is made by Sunlit Game Studio LLC (“we,” “us”). It is an offline writing app for fiction. This policy explains what the app stores and where it goes: it stays on your device.
The short version
- We collect nothing. There is no account, sign-in, server, or cloud service operated by us.
- No analytics, tracking, advertising, or crash reporting. We do not receive information about how you use the app.
- Your writing stays on your device. Deleting the app removes its local data, unless you have separately shared a backup or export.
- You control sharing. Backups, exports, files, and the clipboard are used only when you choose them.
What Emend stores on your device
Emend stores its records locally in its on-device database and app documents. These can include:
- Your books, chapters, and the prose you write
- Ideas, tags, notes, source material you paste in, and alternative drafts
- Saved revisions, the dictionary of names and terms you keep for a book, and items in Trash
- App settings and your last writing position
We cannot see or retrieve these records. They are not sent to us; you can choose to back them up or export them yourself.
Backups, exports, and restore
You may create a JSON backup of your library or a Markdown export of a book, and share either through the iOS share sheet. iOS hands the file to the destination you choose, and that destination’s privacy practices then apply. Backup files are not password-protected; keep them private if their contents are sensitive.
Restoring a backup uses iOS’s document picker; the app can read only the file you select. Restore is a local action that adds separate copies of the backup’s contents and keeps your current writing. Emend does not upload the backup to us.
Clipboard and other apps
Emend can copy a passage of your writing to the clipboard when you ask it to, for example to use in another app such as ChatGPT, and can read what you paste back in. Anything you take to another app is governed by that app’s privacy policy. Emend itself sends nothing to any AI service in this version.
App updates
When it launches, Emend may check Expo Application Services (operated by 650 Industries, Inc.) for an updated version of the app’s own code. That request includes the app version, platform, and a random installation identifier that is not linked to you; it never includes your writing. You can also simply update through the App Store.
What we do not collect
Emend does not collect your name, email address, contacts, location, device identifiers, advertising identifier, usage data, diagnostics, or crash reports. It does not use advertising, analytics, or any backend service operated by us, and it makes no app-initiated network requests other than the update check above.
Children
Emend is a general-audience writing tool and collects no personal information from anyone, at any age.
Your choices and rights
- Delete local data: delete the app to remove its local records from your device.
- Export or back up: create a backup or export when you choose; take care where you send it.
- We hold no personal data, do not sell or share personal information, and cannot access or delete your local records for you.
Apple and this website
Your device backup settings may include Emend data in a device backup managed by Apple or by you. Those backups are separate from Emend’s JSON backup. Deleting the app does not delete copies you have exported or copies retained in device backups.
Apple distributes Emend through the App Store. Information Apple collects as distributor is covered by Apple’s privacy policy. This policy describes the Emend app. Our website has its own privacy practices, including aggregated site analytics, described in the site-wide Privacy Policy.
Changes
We will post an updated policy and change the date above if Emend’s privacy practices change.
